Ordinary Needham Backyard Turned Summer Oasis
In their quest to transform their ordinary Needham backyard into a contemporary oasis, this vibrant young family of five had a clear vision for creating lasting memories with family and friends. The dream project included a small pool and spa for refreshing dips in the summer and cozy warmth during the fall, a modern gas fire pit, and an inviting space for lounging and entertaining, all while preserving ample lawn space for their active kids to play sports.
In the initial landscape architectural designs, we presented multiple options for pool orientation and location, diverse fire pit styles, and two ideas for shade structures. However, the homeowners decided that retaining more lawn space took precedence over a permanent shade structure. They opted for large umbrellas, a flexible solution that could be adapted as their kids grow older and their needs change. The possibility of adding a permanent shade structure in the future remains open.

The rectilinear fire pit design emerged as the favorite, blending seamlessly with the chosen location and complementing the family’s taste and requirements. Careful material selection played a pivotal role in realizing the contemporary retreat. We assisted the homeowners in choosing the right style paver, color, and unique block for the fire pit, ensuring that every element harmonized to create the envisioned space.
Stringing bistro lights in a zigzag pattern over the fire pit area enhanced the ambiance, creating an inviting space for evening gatherings. Additionally, a small stand-up outdoor shower tucked discreetly along the side of the house added practicality and convenience to the overall design.
In the end, this collaborative effort resulted in the realization of a modern escape, perfectly tailored to the family’s vision and lifestyle. The outdoor space now stands as a testament to creativity, thoughtful design, and the pursuit of a contemporary oasis for years of joyful moments to come.
